The Science of Gut Health
Share
We talk a lot about gut health at Bower Botanicals, but what does the science actually say? Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria, collectively known as your gut microbiome, and it does far more than just digest food.
The Gut-Immune Connection
A large share of your immune system's activity is thought to take place in and around the gut. Beneficial bacteria help regulate immune responses and support the gut lining, which in turn supports the body's ability to respond to everyday challenges and stay in balance.
The Gut-Brain Axis
Your gut and your brain are in constant two-way communication, often called the gut-brain axis. Gut microbes produce compounds that can influence mood, focus and stress response, while signals from the brain affect digestion in return. Scientists are still uncovering exactly how deep this connection runs, but a settled gut and a settled mind tend to go hand in hand.
Why Diversity Matters
Having a wide variety of beneficial bacteria matters more than having lots of any single one. A varied, resilient microbiome is generally linked to better digestion and steadier energy, and the best way to support it is a varied diet: plenty of plant fibre, fermented foods and colourful, polyphenol-rich plants.
Prebiotics vs Probiotics
Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria, like the Limosilactobacillus fermentum and Pediococcus pentosaceus strains in our Daily Greens blend, that add to your existing gut population. Prebiotics, such as chicory root inulin, are the fibres that feed the bacteria already there. Probiotics bring in reinforcements, prebiotics keep the whole ecosystem fed, and the two work best together.
Making It a Daily Ritual
None of this needs to be complicated. Plant fibre, fermented food, hydration and movement do more for your gut over time than any quick fix. It's why we built Daily Greens around this idea: prebiotic fibre, targeted probiotics and nutrient-dense greens in one simple daily scoop.
